My internet connection
The government has a project where they are trying to bring broadband to people who live rurally, like myself. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, this seems to involve paying around $100 each month for perhaps 15 gigabytes. My neighbour has it in some form, and seems to find it a much better deal than the alternative, which was building some contraption on the hill and beaming the internet in from some installation in the visible distance. And that was a better alternative to just getting the standard satellite based internet, which was extremely expensive, because the hill gets in the way of the cheaper satellite.
My place just manages to get a cellphone connection if you stand in the right place and don't move during the call. So I've gone for a cheaper approach, taking advantage of this wonderful fact.
This window mounting usually gives me two bars, and sometimes if I am lucky three bars. The internet connectivity through the cellphone tethering is very usable, although mobile broadband isn't cheap. I pay $99 for 12 gigabytes that has to be used within six months, to 2degrees. As long as I am frugal with my usage, and do the heavy stuff when I visit the local library, this works out fine.
